Tauron eMeter: mobile control of energy consumption

Client: Tauron

Business context

Tauron, the largest distributor and the second-largest seller of electricity in Poland, was looking for a way to provide end customers with practical insights into their own consumption. In 2018, together with Leaware, it launched an initiative to create a mobile application that would present data from smart meters in a clear way and support long-term customer engagement.

The market was niche and demanding, but the potential of a consumer-focused approach was clear: greater transparency, better self-service and real support in saving energy. A key priority was to deliver the solution quickly across the main mobile platforms while keeping maintenance and development costs low.

The existing data warehouse already covered a large user base and meter readings, which required a secure and scalable way of making information available in near real time. The project had to combine a mature backend layer with a modern user experience.

Challenge

The main challenge was to design and build a mobile application for iOS, Android and Windows that would present current and daily energy consumption from smart meters in an engaging format. The interface had to be intuitive, consistent across platforms and encourage users to regularly analyse their own energy habits.

At the same time, it was necessary to prepare an advanced API for retrieving data from the data warehouse serving 100,000 users. This meant ensuring scalability, performance and reliability under a high query volume, while also maintaining the security and consistency of the data displayed in the application.

Solution

We used a cross-platform approach based on Xamarin, which allowed us to share around 80% of the code and significantly accelerated development. As a result, we delivered a consistent user experience across iOS, Android and Windows in a short time, maintaining a uniform look and feel as well as functional logic.

On the server side, we designed and implemented a robust API integrated with the existing data warehouse. The architecture was optimised for a high number of concurrent users, ensuring stability, fast response times and secure access to consumption data.

The application provides users with daily energy consumption summaries, enables trend analysis and comparisons, gives instant insight into current meter readings, and allows them to set savings plans with email and SMS notifications. In addition, it visualises consumption for a given day in the form of an animation, making it easier to understand the dynamics of energy use.

The result was strong user adoption and confirmed backend scalability. Since its launch in 2018, the Tauron application has exceeded 100,000 downloads, demonstrating the value delivered to customers and the effectiveness of the chosen architecture.
