TAURON Extranet: faster grid connections through SAP integration
Business context
TAURON Polska Energia SA is one of the key players in the Polish energy sector, supplying more than 51 TWh of energy annually to 5.6 million customers. With equity exceeding PLN 19 billion and a team of more than 25,000 employees, the company is the country’s largest energy distributor, the second-largest producer and seller, and a leading heat supplier in Upper Silesia.
As the customer base grew dynamically, the process of connecting new customers to the grid became increasingly complex. The existing tools were inefficient, causing delays and redundant activities, which had a negative impact on delivery times and the perceived quality of service.
The priority became modernising the end-to-end process without disrupting the core SAP ecosystem. The client needed a solution accessible to distributed teams across different platforms, while also reducing paper-based document circulation and supporting the organisation’s environmental goals.
Challenge
The main challenge was to build a solution tightly integrated with the existing SAP system, enabling real-time data exchange and shortening the connection journey for new customers. The integration had to eliminate duplicate data entry, reduce errors, and provide a single, reliable source of truth for all stakeholders.
Cross-platform availability was equally important: the application needed to run consistently on macOS and Windows, offering an intuitive interface for both business and technical users. Permission mechanisms, data security, and reliability at a level suitable for business-critical processes were required.
An additional element was change management: data migration and clean-up, minimising operational downtime, and ensuring the solution could scale with fluctuating volumes of applications and requests.
Solution
The Leaware team developed Tauron Extranet — a high-performance web application that addresses the key pain points in the grid connection process. At the core of the solution is direct, two-way integration with SAP, enabling real-time data exchange, automatic validations, and the elimination of unnecessary manual re-entry of information.
The application was designed for a broad user base, with optimised performance on macOS and Windows. Structured electronic forms, clear process steps, and automated notifications improved collaboration between departments and reduced handling times. The digitalisation of document workflows reduced paper usage, supporting TAURON’s environmental goals.
The solution was implemented in stages, with a pilot and user training, which helped accelerate adoption of the new tool across the organisation. Standardising data and process paths improved operational quality, while the close integration with SAP ensured consistency and full transparency of case progress.
