Kohl Children’s Museum of Greater Chicago, a renowned institution that offers interactive exhibits and programs to stimulate the imagination and curiosity of children from birth to 8 years old. The museum attracts an average of 300,000 visitors each year and is deeply committed to creating engaging and educational experiences.

Kohl Children’s Museum of Greater Chicago is a beloved destination, fostering creativity, exploration, and learning among young children. In the increasingly digital age, the museum aimed to enhance its reach and influence by integrating technology into their educational framework.
Challenge
The challenge was to develop an application that would be entertaining, educational, and also foster children’s imagination and curiosity. The app needed to be interactive, user-friendly, and age-appropriate, captivating children’s attention while also encouraging them to explore and learn.
Solution
Utilizing iOS technology, Leaware developed “Planetary Pioneers,” an engaging application available for iPads. The app allows users to take a photo of a person and insert their face into an astronaut figure, providing children with a playful and immersive experience of being an astronaut. The created images can then be shared via email, extending the enjoyment beyond the application.

“Planetary Pioneers” sparks children’s interest in space exploration and science in a fun and personalized way. By enabling children to see themselves as astronauts, the app encourages imaginative play, fosters curiosity, and provides a memorable, shareable experience.
Results
While specific download figures are confidential, the app has received an overwhelmingly positive response. Parents have applauded the integration of entertainment and education, and children have reveled in the exciting journey of becoming astronauts.
Data and Evidence
Based on the post-launch surveys, 92% of parents acknowledged that the app made their child’s museum visit more enjoyable, while 89% reported their child’s increased interest in space exploration after using the app. Moreover, 76% of children expressed enthusiasm in sharing their astronaut pictures with family and friends.
Lessons Learnt
“Planetary Pioneers” taught us the immense potential of blending technology with educational content in a fun and engaging manner. The project highlighted the value of understanding the end-users—in this case, children—and tailoring the experience to their curiosity, imagination, and sense of fun. It reinforced the idea that education and play are not mutually exclusive but can be beautifully integrated with the right use of technology, enhancing both the learning and the entertainment value of the experience.
