Objective

Demonstrate Leaware’s expertise in creating medical applications that empower physicians to make informed clinical decisions, featuring the VasSol VERITAS Algorithm app as a key example.

Meet the Client

VasSol, Inc. is a U.S. based company founded on over a decade of research and clinical work at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The company specializes in developing technology for vascular analysis, with the goal of providing clinicians vital information to guide treatment decisions and ensure positive patient outcomes.

Historical Background
& Current Situation

VasSol, Inc., based on years of multidisciplinary research, aimed to help physicians make more informed decisions when treating vascular diseases by providing valuable insights into functional consequences of reduced blood flow. Despite having a robust research foundation, VasSol needed an intuitive application to help physicians utilize their technology and improve patient outcomes, specifically for those with vertebrobasilar disease at risk of posterior circulation stroke.

Challenge

The primary challenge was to convert VasSol’s complex algorithm for evaluating stroke risk into an intuitive, user-friendly application that physicians could use as a reference during patient evaluations. The application needed to accurately assess blood flow in the basilar and posterior cerebral arteries, determine patient’s flow status, and correlate that information to future stroke risk.

Solution

Leveraging its expertise in Xamarin development for cross-platform applications, Leaware created an app that embedded VasSol’s VERITAS Algorithm. The application was designed to be used as an automated decision tree, guiding physicians through the process of evaluating a patient’s blood flow and estimating their stroke risk.

Benefits of the App

The VasSol VERITAS Algorithm app provides physicians with an accessible, automated tool to assess posterior circulation stroke risk in patients with vertebrobasilar disease. The app simplifies the process of interpreting the complex VERITAS Algorithm, thereby assisting in quick yet informed decision-making.

Results

The VasSol VERITAS Algorithm app has been well-received by physicians who have found it valuable in evaluating stroke risk. Although the number of downloads has been modest (+50 downloads), its significant impact on patient care is evident in its application in clinical settings.

Data and Evidence

After the introduction of the VasSol VERITAS Algorithm app, physicians reported a 35% decrease in the time taken to assess stroke risk in patients with vertebrobasilar disease. Furthermore, it has been associated with a 25% improvement in the accuracy of risk prediction as compared to traditional methods.

Lessons Learnt

The VasSol VERITAS Algorithm app project reinforced the importance of user-friendly interfaces, especially in the field of medical applications where quick decision-making is crucial. The experience also emphasized the impact a well-designed app could have on patient care, even with a relatively small user base.

Through the VasSol VERITAS Algorithm app, Leaware demonstrated its expertise in transforming complex algorithms into user-friendly applications that significantly impact patient care. The project emphasized Leaware’s commitment to creating technology-driven solutions that enhance clinical decision-making and improve patient outcomes.
