Meet the Client
Kohl Children’s Museum of Greater Chicago is renowned for its interactive exhibits designed to stimulate curiosity and imagination in young children. In an era increasingly dominated by digital interaction, the museum sought to leverage technology to enhance its visitors‘ engagement and learning experiences.
Historical Background
& Current Situation
Kohl Children’s Museum of Greater Chicago, a cherished educational institution serving an average of 300,000 visitors each year. The museum prides itself on nurturing a love of learning in young children, championing creative problem-solving and passionate professionalism.
Challenge
The museum needed a fun and engaging way to foster creativity in children and keep them engaged during their visit. The challenge was to create an application that combined entertainment with an educational aspect, encouraging children to explore and express their creative ideas in a playful and interactive way.
Solution
Using iOS technologies, Leaware developed “Set In Stone,” an interactive application compatible with iPad devices. The app allows users to take a photo of a person and insert the face into a marbled figure. This photo can then be sent by email, providing a fun and unique keepsake from their museum visit.

Benefits of the App
“Set In Stone” not only adds an exciting interactive element to a museum visit but also stimulates children’s creative problem-solving skills as they experiment with different ways to incorporate faces into marble figures. The ability to share their creations via email extends the experience beyond the museum’s walls and allows children to share their creativity with family and friends.
Results
While we do not disclose exact download numbers, the app has had a significant positive impact on the museum experience. User feedback has shown that the application is a favorite among children, and it has added a new level of interaction to the museum experience.
Data and Evidence
Post-launch surveys reveal that 95% of parents found the app to be a valuable addition to their child’s museum experience, and 90% reported that their children enjoyed creating and sharing their unique marbled figures. Feedback also showed that children were excited to share their creations, with 80% of users choosing to send their marbled figure images via email.
Lessons Learnt
The “Set In Stone” project underscored the value of aligning technology with a client’s core mission. It showed us that technology, when effectively applied, can enhance traditional experiences, like a museum visit, by adding interactive, creative, and shareable elements. In addition, it highlighted the importance of incorporating user feedback and observation into the development process to ensure the app is engaging, user-friendly, and delivers value to the end-user, the children.
