Meet the Client
Mobile Vikings is a MVNO primarily dedicated to mobile internet. In operation since 2008, the company has been part of the Proximus group since 2021. The company is known for its innovative approach to customer engagement and was seeking to extend this to the mobile gaming sphere.
Historical Background
& Current Situation
The trend of location-based mobile games is on the rise, with players seeking immersive experiences that merge digital gaming with physical world exploration. Mobile Vikings, a Belgium-based mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) with a customer base of over 250,000, wanted to capitalize on this trend by launching a city game with a unique spin.
Challenge
The challenge was to create a city gaming app that would blend the physical and digital worlds effectively, promote teamwork, encourage exploration, and keep users engaged over an extended period.
Solution
Leaware developed the Mobile Vikings app, a real-life city game in which players formed clans, searched for and conquered buildings located in different parts of the city or across the country. Using GPS, players had to be within a certain radius of a location to conquer a building. Each building and clan member had specific power levels, and the game mechanics encouraged team play to conquer high-defense buildings. The app also allowed users to manage their Mobile Vikings account, including checking balance, usage, managing Viking Points, and contacting the helpdesk.

Results
The Mobile Vikings app was a massive hit among users, with over 100,000 downloads. It redefined city gaming by offering an engaging and interactive experience. It also improved the Mobile Vikings user experience by integrating account management features into the gaming app.
Data and Evidence
Within the first three months of its launch, the app had attracted over 100,000 downloads and was maintaining a high engagement rate with users spending an average of 25 minutes daily on the app. Moreover, 90% of users rated the app 4 stars or above, showcasing its popularity and positive user experience.
Lessons Learnt
This project reinforced the power of blending digital and physical worlds to create engaging user experiences. It also highlighted the importance of understanding the target audience and tailoring gameplay mechanics accordingly. From a technical perspective, it highlighted the challenges and solutions related to developing location-based games and integrating game mechanics with real-world dynamics. Leaware learned that well-implemented gamification could significantly enhance user engagement and retention.
